About My Art
My mixed media constructions quietly protest a world so fast-paced and confrontational that the enchantment of everyday life is often missed. I work with the articulate and economical imagery of cultural detritus to create art that inspires thoughts about grace, gratitude, and introspection.
The materials that make their way into my assemblages are rich in history and pathos: architectural elements, vintage documents, animal cages, and remnants of domestic arts, toys, and fashion. I will often select an object because of its obvious metaphor or symbol, incorporating its voice as a form of shorthand for social commentary about who we are and how we live.
About Me
I grew up on Cape Canaveral, Florida during the space race between the United States and Russia. Our house was located in a coastal marsh within sight of missile gantries. That land is now the Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge, home to hundreds of wildlife species and migratory birds.
My childhood was spent exploring brackish estuaries and stands of palmetto palms. Visual contrasts such as egrets flying at the rumble of a rocket launch, created in me a lasting appreciation for images that are both familiar and strange.
After earning a BFA at University of Florida with majors in drawing and printmaking, I worked as a commercial artist and modern dancer. Eventually, I moved to the Silicon Valley of California to pursue a career in marketing and communications for the technology industry. I am currently working on a MFA in spatial arts at San Jose State University.
My studio is at Cubberley Artists Studios, an artist residency program sponsored by the city of Palo Alto, California. I am on the board of directors for Christians in the Visual Arts, and founder of Arts of the Covenant, a group for people interested in the intersection of art and faith.
